I know why the caged bird sings

Maya Angelou

The free bird leaps
on the back of the win
and floats downstream
till the current ends
and dips his wings
in the orange sun rays
and dares to claim the sky.

But a bird that stalks
down his narrow cage
can seldom see through
his bars of rage
his wings are clipped and
his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings
with fearful trill
of the things unknown
but longed for still
and is tune is heard
on the distant hill for the caged bird
sings of freedom

The free bird thinks of another breeze
and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees
and the fat worms waiting on a dawn-bright lawn
and he names the sky his own.

But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams
his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream
his wings are clipped and his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing

The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom.

Reflection:

I really like this poem. This poem gives me different impression every time I read. Both of my parents are teachers. You can imagine how teachers are strict on children ─ their students and their own kids. I felt like I was trapped in a cage. I used to look at “free birds” in the eye of admiration. Nevertheless, I didn’t give up. No, I did not want to give up. Although I was in the cage and there was an owner of the cage, I, myself is still mine.

I started to sing: first inside. As time went by, I started to sing out loud. However, this wasn’t a true song. It was a mere defiance against the cage. It was the songs that touched my heart. While singing a song ─ having various experiences, talking with friends, exercising, etc. ─ I realized important values in life. I also learned how to open the cage and get out of there.

I looked around. There were a lot of neighbors who suffer from their own barriers: the cage. I want to help and embrace the ones who need help. That is why I will never stop singing. I will sing for this world.
